CUNY Lecturer - Mathematics in Queens, New York

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Mathematics of Queens College of the City University of New York invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Lecturer, beginning in the Fall 2018 semester.

Often referred to as “the jewel of the CUNY system,” Queens College is an urban school in a suburban setting, where a large and diverse student body receives personalized attention. This formula has made us one of New York’s premier educational institutions. With a mission to prepare students to become leading citizens of an increasingly global society, we offer a rigorous education in the liberal arts and sciences under the guidance of a faculty dedicated to both teaching and research. Our liberal arts, science, and pre-professional programs earn us high rankings in prestigious college guides such as The Princeton Review America’s Best Value Colleges. Our students graduate with the ability to think critically, address complex problems, explore various cultures, and use modern technologies and information resources. They have won prominence in nearly every field.

The duties of this position include teaching undergraduate courses in mathematics, developing innovative methods of instruction, curricular development, serving on departmental and college committees, and advising students. A Lecturer’s primary obligation is to provide quality, inspiring instruction to students. This position requires 27 semester-hours of classroom teaching per year, with no released time for research. It is important to realize that this is a full-time teaching and curricular development position, not a primarily research focused position, nor a postdoctoral position. Reappointment for a sixth year earns a Certificate of Continuous Employment (CCE) from CUNY.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree, provide significant evidence of achievement and potential as a mathematics educator, and have a strong commitment to teaching a diverse student body. While applicants are required to hold a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or statistics, preference will be given to those who have already earned a master’s degree in mathematics or statistics or who have made significant progress towards a doctoral degree in these subjects. In addition, the applicant must possess excellent communications skills and demonstrate outstanding teaching ability. The applicant must have at least two years of teaching experience including full responsibility for courses at the level of calculus or above. Experience with innovative teaching methods and curriculum development is preferred.

COMPENSATION

CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs. We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development.

HOW TO APPLY

Applications consisting of a cover letter, an up-to-date curriculum vitae containing a complete itemized list of courses taught, a teaching philosophy statement, and a minimum of three letters of recommendation (at least two of which provide detailed information regarding the candidate’s teaching) must be received electronically at www.mathjobs.org by the closing date.

In addition, all candidates MUST also apply through CUNYfirst (go to www.cunyfirst.cuny.edu and click "Employment", click "Search job postings", click "More options to search for CUNY jobs", search by Job Opening ID number (17236), click "Apply Now" and follow the instructions there).
