The Professional Services Category Manager position is responsible for following the Category Management Life Cycle to deliver a holistic cross-functional value optimization process employing supply management value levers. Ensure the strategic alignment of the purchasing portfolio with the business strategy. Implement category specific and cross-functional value levers for designated categories to deliver business value. Responsible for meeting strategic goals, driving performance measurements and value generation for assigned categories (e.g., Healthcare Benefits, HR Services, Management Consulting, Legal Services, and Financial Services). Execute Category Management methodology and oversee go-to-market activities from demand management to RFx creation, contract execution, and supplier performance management. Liaise with Procurement and MTA stakeholders, Project Managers, the Board, and Legal. Partner with Category Analysts to identify market trends that can be leveraged to deliver robust and holistic category strategies.


Responsible for overall consistently executing Category Management Life Cycle.

Focus primarily on demand requirements that are complex in nature.

Create total value generation through innovative data synthesis and analytics.

Utilize rigorous methodical cost-based approach across multiple stakeholder groups.

Make strategic decisions and focus on ROI.

Utilize analysis of historical spend data, market research and cost modeling.

Develop strategic improvement opportunities aimed at meeting MTA goals.

Provide leadership to key stakeholders and build relationships.

Partner with Category Specialists to develop understanding of key market and cost.

Develop and implement sourcing, negotiation and contracting strategies.

Execute go-to-market strategies from RFP creation to contract execution.

Collaborate with Project Managers and internal stakeholders to validate SOW.

Lead cross-functional meetings and collaboration activities.

Determine how buys can contribute to minority goals.

Prepare Board approval paperwork for requisitions that exceed defined thresholds.

Draft and distribute RFP documentation and complete it in a timely manner.

Evaluate RFP responses, ensuring they are compliant with MTA policies.

Manage award process, collaborating with Legal on contract execution.

Coordinate distribution and collection of required government forms.

Manage contract through end date.

Execute supplier management activities, ensuring oversight, direction and development.

Achieve cost savings and value creation for assigned categories and meet agreed upon stakeholder requirements.

Achieve diversity spend targets and execute assigned requisitions in a timely fashion.

Route the majority of category spend through strategic contracts; ensure Category Strategy Playbooks are complete and compliant; and achieve operational excellence of assigned categories.


Require knowledge of category management methodologies and tools, market trends, strategy development, supplier relationship management, supply chain management, contract writing, negotiations, and contract administration.

Must have category management knowledge, commercial expertise for assigned categories.

Require strong collaboration skills with ability to build effective relationships, work cross-functionally, and influence peers and key stakeholders.

Excellent interpersonal, motivational, and leadership skills needed.

Ability to deal with change and ambiguity effectively required.

Require strong project management skills; ability to plan and track, remove barriers, manage change, resolve conflict, build consensus, and motivate team members across multiple concurrent projects.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to tailor messages to the given audience; present information in a clear and concise manner.

Ability to prioritize, organize and multitask in a fast-paced and challenging environment a must.

Education and Experience

BA/BS in Supply Chain Management, Procurement and Contract Management, or related field.

A minimum eight (8) years of satisfactory full-time experience in professional services Procurement, similar role, or commensurate experience.

MBA preferred.
