Columbia University Information Technology (CUIT) supports mission critical technology for over 40,000 faculty, staff and students at Columbia University.

Reporting to the Director of Web Services, the Sr. Developer will provide Front-End solutions built upon the Drupal 7/8 framework. The candidate should have expert-level skills in HTML and CSS; write eloquent, structured JavaScript and be comfortable with standard libraries like jQuery. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys stretching their limits and is comfortable working with server-side technology (like PHP) when the need arises and has familiarity working with APIs to produce powerful and engaging interfaces.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborates with other web developers and UX specialists to perform site build-outs and optimizations.

  • Understands and implements basic usability principles and guidelines related to responsive web design and mobile-friendly development.

  • Contributes to and assists in development test plans and provides technical support in all phases of testing and QA leading to implementation.

  • Interacts well with both technical and non-technical colleagues and clients.

  • Pays strong attention to visual detail.

  • Weekend and off-hour work may be necessary on occasion.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications for Grade

  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required.

  • Minimum 4-6 years' related experience.

Additional Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

  • High-level proficiency in HTML, CSS and Javascript.

  • Proficiency in Drupal 7/8.

  • At least 2 years' experience building web applications with a PHP - based CMS.

  • Proficiency in web-related *nix administration.

  • Experience with client side JS MVC frameworks (e.g. AngularJS, Ember, Backbone)

  • Basic knowledge of Unix-style command line; Familiarity with GIT / SVN source control.

  • Strong understanding of debugging for the browser, designing for cross-browser and device support.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Must be able to work independently and efficiently within a fast paced, team-oriented environment.

  • Ability to work with changing priorities and with multiple projects.

  • Ability to be precise and attentive to detail is essential.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work weekend and off-hour work on occasion.

Special Instructions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in building accessible websites (508, WCAG).

  • Experience working with decoupled/headless implementations.

  • Experience with Node.js and design/development of RESTful APIs.

  • Proficiency in rapid UI development using Jquery or similar Javascript library.

  • Keen understanding of web standards, usability and accessibility.

  • Experience as technical lead on a team.

  • Rails experience is a plus.

  • XSLT experience is a plus.
