POSITION DETAILS

Baruch College’s strategic plan calls for increased visibility, branding, and recognition of the College’s academic programs, educational quality, and achievements with key constituencies. The Office of Communications, Marketing and Public Affairs is responsible for the College’s brand identity, and its overall communications, including public and media relations.

The Public Relations Specialist will provide public and media relations support to the department. S/he will create and write press releases, media advisories, and online and digital content that is essential for promoting the College, and its three schools (The Zicklin School of Business, the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, and the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences). The Specialist will collaborate with members of the Office of Communications, Marketing and Public Affairs (OCMPA) to develop multimedia content that will build relationships for the College, deepen engagement with key audiences, support our public relations and marketing efforts, and position Baruch, its three Schools, Centers and Institutes, at the highest quality. The Specialist will work closely with departmental colleagues as well as the department’s clients from across the College to tell Baruch’s stories using public and media relations and social media tools. In this position, s/he will work within the department’s structure as an in-house, full-service creative agency to meet deadlines and budgets. This position reports to the Vice President of Communication, Marketing and Public Affairs.

The Public Relations Specialist will:

  • Generate ideas and craft pitches to garner media interest and coverage to promote the College, its faculty, students, academic programs, and events.

  • Write press releases and media advisories for targeted press distribution and pitching.

  • Transform story ideas, pitches, and press releases into multimedia storytelling content for the College’s online communications platforms, including social media.

  • Improve visibility and increase awareness of Baruch-generated content via search engine optimization.

  • Promote the College’s recruitment marketing efforts through PR channels.

  • Implement media planning and support outreach for press-invited events, such as ribbon-cutting ceremonies, press briefings, important College events, and conferences.

  • Gather and synthesize public relations data into quarterly analytics reports. Use analytics to recommend strategies and content creation.

  • Assist in the execution of a social media strategy to effectively present content across existing and emerging social media channels.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree and four years' related experience required

  • Must have collaborative approach and focus on customer service that supports the department’s in-house agency structure

  • Experience working in a public relations agency a plus

  • Ability to keep current on industry best practices and willingness to develop opportunities by attending industry-related webinars, conferences, and seminars

  • Familiarity with higher education marketing and communications a plus

  • Plans public activities and contributes to marketing of College activities and programs to external groups

  • With College publications and editorial personnel, plans, writes, and produces publicity materials and other external communications

  • May maintain relationships with media representatives

$47,340 - $51,126; salary commensurate with education and experience.
