Barnard College Part-time Nurse Practitioner in New York, New York

Job Function

To deliver comprehensive primary health care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and referral to students in a clinic setting with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention. Inherent in this role is independence and autonomy of practice within the framework of established guidelines, a collaborative practice agreement with the Primary Care Health Service Medical Director, and under the nurse practitioner scope of practice as governed by the New York State Education Department.

Essential Duties Summary

Direct Clinical Care: 1. Obtain extensive health histories including psychosocial, cultural and environmental aspects. 2. Perform comprehensive physical examinations. 3. Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests including laboratory and radiologic tests. 4. Make appropriate diagnoses and formulate a treatment plan accordingly. 5. Identify and manage common health problems, both acute and chronic in accordance with approved guidelines. Utilize current literature resources in clinical decision-making. 6. Prescribe a variety of modalities to meet wellness and illness needs including but not limited to medications, nutrition, exercise, and traditional nursing treatments as appropriate. 7. Evaluate need for follow-up, effectiveness of interventions, patients’ responses to plan of care and modify plan if necessary. 8. Institute basic emergency procedures in life-threatening situations. 9. Assist with triage of walk-in patients with appropriate treatment or referral. 10. Participate in the after-hours clinician on-call system, with a physician available for telephone back-up as needed. 11. Refer patients to physicians for consultation or to specialized health resources as appropriate. 12. Work collaboratively with other members of the health care team including physicians, registered nurses, nutritionist, psychologist, health/wellness counselor, and administrative staff to provide comprehensive care. 13. Document all pertinent data in patients’ electronic medical records.

Education and Health Promotion: 1. Provide individualized anticipatory guidance, screening and health education to patients to promote and to maintain health. 2. Advise and counsel patients about health and lifestyle issues identified as concerns; target any problem areas and refer to appropriate departments or external resources as appropriate. 3. Participate in formal and informal teaching programs. 4. Provide health information to organizations, media outlets, staff and faculty as requested by Medical Director. 5. Participate in campus-wide educational health and wellness related events.

Patient Communication: 1. Communicate with patients via telephone regarding lab results, advice, follow-up instructions, and referrals. 2. Provide precise information to enable the patient to make informed decisions regarding health care and related issues. 3. Plan appropriate care utilizing campus and off-campus resources and relay information as necessary and appropriate for continuity of care. 4. Promote positive patient relations and treat others with care and respect, maintaining confidentiality, privacy and dignity. 5. Inform patients of their rights. 6. Promote patient participation in planning their care.

Supervision: 1. Exercise broad professional responsibility for advanced nursing practice. 2. Function in a collaborative relationship with the Medical Director and other staff physicians. 3. Operate in accordance with nurse practitioner scope of practice as dictated by certification and guidelines.

CLINICAL QUALITY/COMPLIANCE/PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: 1. Maintain currency of licensure, certification, and continuing education as required for professional certification by New York State Education Department. 2. Actively support and participate in Primary Care Health Service Quality Assurance activities, interdepartmental provider meetings, case conferences and supervisor/peer review. 3. Participate in yearly performance evaluation and review of job description. 4. Develop and evaluate own goals for professional growth. 5. Participate in the development, review, and revision of practice guidelines and development of standards, patient care policies, and clinical procedures. 6. Participate in updating departmental literature, patient education, and medical forms. 7. Help monitor self/peer practice to assure overall quality of patient care. 8. Promote continuity and consistency in the practice framework at the Primary Care Health Service. 9. Maintain confidentiality of information. 10. Demonstrate sensitivity to students of diverse backgrounds and commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. 11. Serve as a role model and resource person to other staff within the Primary Care Health Service. 12. Contribute to orientation of new personnel. 13. Carry out other duties as assigned by the Executive Director, Primary Care Health Service or Medical Director.

Required Qualification Summary
  • Current New York State RN license

  • Current certification as nurse practitioner in New York State, preferably in primary care

  • Masters of Science in Nursing or equivalent Master’s degree in appropriate field

  • Current DEA number

  • Current NPI number

  • Prior experience with phlebotomy and IV placement.

  • Computer skills; prior experience with electronic medical records.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualification Summary
  • Two years of ambulatory or emergency care experience

  • Prior experience in a college health or student health setting

  • Prior women’s health experience
