The Assistant Director helps the Office of Global Programs staff with their growing international initiatives by acting as a point of contact for student advising, assisting with student programming, and administration.


-Advise interested students around study abroad opportunities to determine the program best suited to their academic, professional/personal needs and counsel them through the application/admission/departure process.

-Lead pre-departure orientation on preparing for and adapting to the study abroad experience. Implement distance learning tools using guided reflection to enhance cross-cultural learning and cultural integration into the host country. Develop re-entry materials to facilitate student re-integration into the US and Columbia.

-Conduct re-entry orientation for all Columbia undergraduate study abroad returnees, including students from Columbia College (CC), General Studies (GS) and School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), to provide information about housing, registration/credit transfer and provide a supportive forum to discuss study abroad experiences.

-Research creative and academic ways to continue cross-cultural learning through volunteer work, language practice, etc. Advise students in the continuation of professional development opportunities building upon study abroad experience. Implement materials to help students articulate their study abroad experience to future employers.

-Respond to general e-mail/phone inquiries from students regarding study abroad opportunities, requirements, and policies for study abroad programs.

-Refine study abroad process for students attending non-Columbia programs.

-Create/maintain study abroad materials for CC, GS and SEAS students in collaboration with GS and SEAS study abroad advisors. Maintain study abroad website, by updating on-line applications and brochure pages for approved non-Columbia programs.

Minimum Qualifications for Grade

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required. At least two years of related experience required.

Excellent writing and speaking skills. Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills; working knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel, and the capacity to learn relevant SIS applications and web content management systems; familiarity with liberal arts college curricula; demonstrated ability to work with minimal day-to-day supervision.
