The New York Public Library NYPL BridgeUp Tutor - Countee Cullen in Manhattan, New York
The New York Public Library is building a large-scale OST presence throughout its three boroughs, where we serve approximately 20,000 children and youth every day. To serve this group, we are building a team of talented, committed and enthusiastic educators who recognize the NYPL’s role in enriching the lives of the young people we serve.
BridgeUp chooses small cohorts of students in the 8th grade and provides academic, college prep, life skills and other services through the 12th grade with the goal of graduating these students with the “21st Century skills” essential to thriving in college and career.
Each branch site is managed by a Helen Gurley Brown Education Fellow who serves as a mentor, educator, and skill builder to participants. Supervised by a Lead Tutor, Level I College Tutors will provide “Homework Help” directly to students and assist the Lead Tutor in implementing academic lessons and activities that are of high interest and relevance to the students served.
Program Hours: Monday – Thursday, 3:00pm-7:00pm; Friday, 3:00pm-5:00pm
Level I Tutor Hours: (flexible afternoon and early evening hours)
General Tutor Shift Hours:
Monday - Thursday, 3:00pm-7:00pm
2 - 4 afternoons per week

Program activities are made possible through the institutional resources of the New York Public Library and the financial support of the Helen Gurley Brown Foundation
Reporting to the BridgeUp Lead Tutor, Tutors will:
Develop positive relationships with students that foster their academic and personal growth.
Work one-on-one or in small groups with students to provide them with Homework Help and academic tutoring to improve their understanding of math, reading, social studies and/or science, at all levels.
Assist students during “mini-lessons”/ learning activities that are led by Fellow and/or Lead Tutor.
Meet with the Lead Tutor to discuss student progress and planning needs.
Help BridgeUp Staff monitor students and maintain a safe learning environment during program activities.
Use best practices when tutoring students and managing classroom.
Attend required meetings and trainings.
Perform other duties assigned.
Currently enrolled in a 4 year college, preferably in Junior or Senior year.
Possess a concrete understanding of basic concepts in middle and high school Math, Science, Reading/Writing, History, and Foreign Language
Experience as an academic tutor.
Experience working with teenagers.
Flexible and able to work well under pressure, meet deadlines, and wear different hats.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
Must pass a criminal background check and drug screening
